"Better communication would have saved a lot of worry"

About: Derriford Hospital / Cardiology Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Cancer Services

(as a friend),

My partner has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and aortic stenosis. Also diabetic and has a painful hernia. He has been denied the major surgery for his cancer because of the heart problem. So we opted for chemo/radiotherapy at our local hospital in Exeter. We have now been called to Derriford for some sort of test although no-one seems able to tell us what it is, what it's for, if he can drive after the test - we live in Exeter and I don't drive - and the RD&E have been told that he can't have the cancer treatment until the Derriford consultant says he can. He has already had an angiogram at Exeter but apparently this is something different but having spoken to the appointments people at Derriford it sounds very similar. Very confused, frustrated and stressed by the lack of communication when a letter setting the details out would be all it took to understand everything. All we've had is a phone call, which practically amounted to bullying us into going to this test. It is now almost six months since his initial diagnosis, he has multiple invasive tests etc and we were all set to go with the cancer treatment. Now we're afraid the cancer will spread while we are messed about like this by Derriford. Better communication between hospitals and between Derriford and their patients would have saved a lot of worry.

I have nothing but good things to say about treatments, communications and the staff at the RD&E - in fact you have all been marvellous! My concerns are all about Derriford and I'm sorry if that didn't come across very well in my 'story' which was posted on a day and time when I was feeling very stressed. As it happens, on our return from Derriford that afternoon there WAS a letter which arrived after we'd left, although it was still not that informative. As I understand it communication between the two hospitals is an issue. Meanwhile, it is to be hoped that the extra funding for digitalisation of the NHS, announced by the Chancellor yesterday, will help to remedy that.
