"My Care app and missed appointment"

About: Belfast City Hospital / Gynaecology Mater Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I’ve been waiting on an urgent gynaecology appointment. I’m 5 years in menopause with a bleed.

Was text to say there was a longer wait and did I still want it. Said yes. Got a text confirming. No appointment came. I check with hospital April no appointment and I phoned my GP told I had to wait. Got a letter through the post to say I’d missed an appointment I did not know I had.

I phoned the patient appointment line and apparently because I logged on to My Chart on the advice of my surgery to see blood results (which weren’t there) I’d activated getting letters through the app. I did not know this. I’ve never looked at the app again as there was nothing on it.

There was no notification that if something to view on the app.

Another appointment had been made – for another 4 weeks later!!! If I have cancer and if it’s hormone fed this is very detrimental for me. When this appointment was made an email came to straight away to advise logging on to the app that I had new correspondence. That did not happen with original appointment.

1. How are patients to know to check app for appointments if no email or notifications given.

2. Why have THREE methods of communication- text, app and postal letter.

3. The cost of these appointment systems/procedures/ systems to the NHS. A consultant waited for me for an appointment I desperately need.

I’m actually now thinking of going to my MLA. Can something be done?

Dear deltapc43

My name is Tracey I am Assistant Service Manger for Gynaecology services in Belfast Trust. I am very sorry to read of your poor experience relating to communication of a long awaited gynaecology appointment.

The management of appointments is booked outside of the service with Central Booking Office colleagues and I have raised this concern with them.

If you wish to email:PatientExperience@belfasttrust.hscni.net they can raise this with the appropriate booking office to investigate your concerns.

I hope your have your Gynaecology appointment soon and all goes well.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback that helps us consider ways to improve services for our patients.

Kind regards

Update posted by deltapc43 (a service user)

Thank you Tracey. The trust were extremely helpful after I made the complaint. I had my appointment yesterday and the staff and service was outstanding. The staff at the Mater are above and beyond regarding friendliness, professionalism, being respectful and work ethic

I think a wider public awareness advert of the app. Now that I am on it - it’s excellent. Again thanks for coming back to me.

Dear Deltapc 43

I am delighted to hear you have had your Gynaecology appointment and were pleased with your experience. We continue to strive to provide excellent service for all our patients.

I agree there needs to be further promotion and education around Mycare as a resource and believe this is something being looked into. As a user myself I find it very impressive and useful in keeping up to date with may appointments and results.

Wishing you all the best.

Regards

Tracey
