"Excellent staff just some troubles"

About: Mater Hospital / Accident & Emergency Mater Hospital / Ward D

(as a service user),

About a month after my last visit my GP told me that he was sending me back to hospital with another infection. I chose the Mater. The 5 hour wait to get into A&E after Triage indicated the underfunding of our NHS.

My wife and I were immediately lifted by my being assessed by a completely ‘on top of her game’ Doctor who inspired complete confidence and trust. The Nurse remembered me from April and got blood from where doctor didn’t - no issue - no egos in Mater teams! Relationships between all disciplines are  clearly excellent! Tests carried out, plumbing fitted. infection identified - strategy set and a bed quickly found in Ward D for me. I was telling the Porter how pleased I was at being treated in the Mater- how friendly everybody is. He told me that his Mother had been in a few months ago and that he was delighted with treatment that she got.

I got a bed in bay in Ward D and again expert and tender care. Next night I was horrified at treatment of a staff member by another patient. They goaded them and were physical as the patient was pulling at a piece of equipment. Witnessing the staff being treated like this was very upsetting.

Please be assured that this staff member was highly competent and professional at all times!

I hope that something can be done about incidents like this - be grateful if you can solve. Thank-YOU!

Dear PaulD589

My name is Bernie Carey and I am the Service Manager of the Mater and ward D

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. We are truly grateful for your lovely feedback.

It means a great deal to our staff to know that you felt supported, respected, and well cared for during your recent visit to the Mater. We understand how difficult it can be to come into hospital, and we are heartened to hear that our staff—across all roles—made a positive difference to you and your wife during this time.

Your recognition of the professionalism, compassion, and teamwork shown by our colleagues, especially in Ward D, has been shared with the teams involved. Thank you

We are also sorry to hear that you witnessed a distressing incident while in our care. We appreciate your support and reassurance regarding their conduct, and we are proud of the dignity and professionalism our staff continue to show in challenging situations.

Wishing you a steady recovery.

Best wishes to you both

Bernie Carey
