"Truly disappointed"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Gynaecology

(as a parent/guardian),

Failure of care from Early Pregnancy Unit shocking treatment by a sonographer who showed no compassion or care. Had to attend unit three times to have internal scans to check on pregnancy - where my daughter saw very pregnant women.

Perhaps separate receptions would make it better. Waited well over an hour passed each appointment time. Failed to take bloods to confirm suspected miscarriage from private clinic. Made to wait an agonising and heartbreaking three weeks. Ended in surgical management at 11 weeks when pregnancy ended at 6 weeks. Could have prevented surgery if they had taken bloods at first appointment and second appointment.

Disgusting would not recommend. Truly disappointed with daughters care.

However, Wynard Ward were fantastic and can't thank them enough for being truly wonderful caring for my daughter during her second miscarriage.

I am very sorry to hear about your daughters experience when she attended the early pregnancy unit. This is not how we would want the women that attend the clinic to feel so I apologise for how you and your daughter felt about her care.

Unfortunately we have a shared reception for outpatient clinics at the Centre for Womens health and this is not within the clinics remit but you may have seen the building work, that a new reception is being made in the entrance hall and then you will be directed to the appropriate clinical area so hopefully this will help with some of your concerns.

We are an emergency clinic and therefore it should have been explained that the time allocated is not an appointment time and the visit can take up to a couple of hours depending on what clinicians that you need to see.

Regarding the number of scans and interval taken to make a diagnosis, unfortunately this sometimes can be the case, we follow national guidance and in early pregnancy sometimes we are not able to intervene until time has passed and blood tests are not always helpful in aiding or expediting a diagnosis.

It is difficult to provide more information without your daughters details so please get in touch and I will endeavour to provide more individualised feedback.

Once again I apologise to your daughter and your family in how you felt about her care in what is such a difficult time for you all and thank you for your kind words regarding the care you received from Wynard Ward Staff.

with kind regards
