"Staff made it a more pleasant experience"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Endoscopy Pre Assessment The Ulster Hospital / Endoscopy Unit

(as the patient),

I was recently booked in for an endoscopy. I had to prep for this by eating a low fibre diet for 4 days previous. The day before the procedure I wasn't allowed to eat solid food after 10.00 am. I thought I would really struggle with not eating but I managed ok. I did get hungry around 5.30 pm so I had a small tub of Mango and passonfruit jelly ( jelly is allowed as long as it's not red or purple in colour).

I started taking Moviprep, which was sent to me by the hospital to clear the bowel, at 6.00pm the night before the procedure. This kept me running to the loo for about 4 hours but then stopped so I was able to sleep. Some people I spoke to had been up all night! I then took the second dose of Moviprep at 7.00am on the day of the procedure. Again running to the loo but again it stopped after about 4 hours allowing me to get showered before heading to the hospital.

Procedure was a bit painful/uncomfortable but the staff gave me gas & air along with the sedation. I could not praise all the staff enough for putting me at ease and making it a more pleasant experience.  The worst bit I would say is the clearing of the bowel but the actual procedure is nothing to worry about.

Pmaits69,

Thank you so much for this feedback.

The preparation before a colonoscopy can be so difficult, but is really important to ensure the bowel is completely clear for the procedure.

It is great to hear that the staff were able to put you at ease, and your comments here will certainly be useful for anyone who is awaiting a colonoscopy.

I hope you are now recovering well.

Take care.
