"The care that we received was excellent"

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

I presented to the emergency department one evening with my brother. He is battling an alcohol addiction and had become medically unwell. I was worried that he was developing a brain condensation called Wernicke's encephalopathy.

The care that we received was excellent, from the reception desk, through triage into the main department. Addiction comes with a lot of stigma, but I felt unjudged by the team. The nurse (Shavanna) was compassionate and caring towards my brother despite him being under the influence of alcohol. The doctor (Rachel) was very thorough in her investigation and reassured me that I hadn't wasted NHS time and resource. My brother was given fluids, and a combination of drugs to help him feel better including an infusion on B vitamins. Luckily he was well enough to come home with me that night. The next day he was so much better, signs of possible encephalopathy were no longer visibly obvious. My brother is now in rehab but wanted to pass on his thanks and my thanks for his care. Thank you
