"It's all taking so long"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Medical Imaging Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I had a trapped neck nerve. No previous. It was getting better. My arm got wrenched behind my back. Since then i've been suffeting extreme pain. .neck, shoulder, throat gagging, nearly falling over. Nerve tinglng. Whole of my body feeling misaligned from top of head to base of spine.

I feel this needs urgent attention. Waiting on an ultrasound scan - but it's all taking so long! I'm in pain.

I am responsible for monitoring overall service delivery, and the day to day running of both departments. I work closely with the Orthopaedic Consultants, Radiologists, Therapists, Trauma Nurse Practitioners, Orthopaedic Practitioners and Nursing staff to ensure cohesive care is delivered. I am very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff, who work extremely hard to ensure patient safety is maintained, and that clinics run as smoothly as possible.

Dear Miss Silver,

I am so very sorry to hear that you are in such discomfort with your trapped nerve and that it is affecting your whole body. I completely understand why you are feeling so frustrated with the system, and the fact that there are long waiting times associated with any investigations that may be required.

Unfortunately as an NHS service we are in a situation where the volume of patients requiring access to diagnostic interventions outweighs the actual availability of staff and equipment. This is something that as a Trust we are acutely aware of and are attempting to manage safely, within the financial constraints placed upon us.

Please be reassured that the waiting lists for all radiological investigations are monitored on a daily basis to try and manage this, and that we do try our hardest to ensure that everyone is provided with the necessary appointments.

I am sure that a representative from the Radiology department will also comment on your honest feedback and valid concerns raised regarding the length of waiting times experienced by yourself in this instance.

I sincerely hope that your symptoms improve and that you are able to be more comfortable in the near future.

Kind regards,

Julia King
