"My prenatal, section and postnatal experience"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Maternity care / Labour Suite Perth Royal Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as a service user),

From my initial booking appointment right through to being discharged from Perth midwifery care, I had a very positive experience.

My midwife was Rhona, and she couldn’t have been more attentive and informative throughout my visits to the midwife unit. She also made sure that all my visits were carried out by her.

I regularly visited the Perth midwife unit, and triage at Ninewells due to reduced movement, and was never made to feel like an inconvenience. I was always reminded that I had done the right thing, and to phone again should I need reassurance.

At 38+3 it was discovered that my baby was breech, and so we opted for an elective section at 39 weeks. This was a very positive experience for me and my husband. We were given all the information required to make an informed decision, and every possible option was discussed. We were given time to think about our options before deciding on what was best for us as a family.

On arrival at the ward on the morning of my section, we were kept informed by all involved - the obstetrician (Keith), anaesthetist (Kenneth) and midwife (Isla).

They discussed the process and answered any questions or concerns that myself or my husband had, before taking us to theatre.

The whole process was daunting for me, but everything went smoothly, and our wishes were honoured regarding delayed cord clamping, skin to skin etc. I was assisted to breast feed in the recovery ward by Isla, before heading back to the ward. Again, on the ward, I was never made to feel like an inconvenience for pressing my buzzer for assistance. Everyone was very accommodating. Big shout out to the midwives who appeared to go from surgery, to recovery, to the ward, without so much as a tea break, your care did not go unnoticed! Thank you!

Following discharge from ninewells, my appointments with my midwife team have been beneficial too.

Dear Pips2025

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking time to share your story.

It is wonderful to hear you have had such positive experience in a number of our maternity service sites and I hear really clearly from your story that you felt partnership in care and choice was a really positive feature for you. It is wonderful to hear you describe how information was shared and time was given for you to make decisions about your care and pathways of care.

Your feedback will be shared with the multi disciplinary team and please know your gratitude for the care you have received will be warmly welcomed. All of the team in maternity services work really hard to support this type of positive experience for all women and it is heart warming to hear this reflected in your kind words.

Warm Regards,

Lee-Anne Abel

Senior Midwife
