"If I'd been listened to, more help could've been given"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

One evening recently my right knee 'popped'. On other occasions I've done this i've been able to fix the issue by straightening or bending it myself,  however on this occasion it wouldn't work, the pain was excruciating and I couldn't stand.  I called nhs24 and was asked to attend minor injuries but given that I couldn't stand, an ambulance was sent for me. The ambulance arrived just before midnight and once settled with pain relief I was taken to Hairmyres where I was in the ambulance waiting until 6.30am, all the while receiving IV morphine, still unable to move the leg.

Once admitted I was seen by nursing staff to check my vitals, this was all they did, no conversation offered and a bit later seen by medical staff and told I'd be sent for xray.  As expected the xray showed the bones were fine, however I still had the feeling that something had moved and needed to be moved back. Once the results of the xray were reviewed I was told I'd simply injured my knee and was given crutches, pain relief and knee exercises.  Even whilst walking with the doctor I tried to explain that whatever had popped needed to be popped back and if someone could help manipulate the knee it would help but I was told this sounded ridiculous. So I took my crutches and left in tears as no one had really offered any help or listened to what I was saying.

I went to my bed, did my exercises then woke a while later to a pop in the knee, it had in fact popped back into place, still painful but no crutches required. I feel if I'd been listened to, more help could've been given,  if it had been a kneecap dislocation they would've manipulated that but they would do nothing except tell me it sounded ridiculous.

Dear Ellaxander

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience after attending the Emergency Department when your knee had 'popped'. This was obviously exceptionnally painful for you and very uncomfortable.

When you arrived at the hospital I see that you had a very long wait in the ambulance and I would like to apologise for this delay. I am also disappointed to read that there was a lack of communication with medical and nursing staff and that you felt that you were not listened to.

I will share your comments with the ED team so they can reflect on their practice, however to fully understand and review your care journey, I wonder if you could contact and share your details.

Again, I apologise that the standard of care you received, fell short of the standard that we would expect.

I hope to hear from you soon

Lise
