During my time since last year I have had repeated flashbacks of the neglect I faced in the Bluestone wards after being admitted multiple times in a short time period and discharged repeatedly. The consultant I had did not demonstrate any empathy or compassion and even got to the stage where I was not treated with any medication or given any information about alternatives. The more time went on, the more I became progressively unwell.
If I had been treated sooner, it could have been a much better outlook and symptoms could have been alleviated quickly. Instead I was treated with no dignity or respect and insisted other means instead. Rather than trying to treat my hypomania to the development of mania, the consultant left me and instead changed my diagnosis to a personality disorder. According to the Mental Health Act in Northern Ireland, personality disorder is not covered by the act as a plausible diagnosis which means staff don't have to treat people with medications etc. Despite this, none of my symptoms matched this. I was left to endure more intense symptoms as a result of the neglect instead of treating the symptoms as soon as possible and being able to recover quicker.
