I recently wrote above my grandfather's care regarding him going to Aand E on a number of occasions and then being sent home being told he just had muscular pain. My grandfather was eventually admitted and the staff on the wards were fantastic, my grandfather has had great care. But after his 5 trips to A and E with so called muscular pain turns out the bones in his back were fractured and I believe each time he was sent home more damage was caused. He was in hospital for 3 weeks.
We were waiting on a care package being put in place so he could go home when my granddad was told he was being moved to Castle Douglas, apparently a hospital for people getting ready to go home. But he's been put on a ward with people who will probably not be going home and grandad's mental health is declining. If the hospital had just treated him on his first visit instead of sending him home in a taxi he might be home now. He could walk before all this.
I should add, before my grandad was moved, 2 doctors visited him. I should say one of the reasons my grandad was admitted was because when one of the amazing OTs that visited him at home before the last ambulance was called (doctor was rang and asked to call ambulance believing it would arrive quicker), he managed to get my grandad to sit up but his feet turned pure black, he'd never seen anything like it and nor had the doctors. They took photos of his feet (I should say they were taking blood regular and most days it was pure black, not dark red but black, which means lack of oxygen in his blood). So when the doctors seen him they told him there was a good chance he'd end up back in in the critical ill ward as he would no longer be in a room which as we believe was oxygen controlled where grandad's blood was turning red again. So instead of investigating this they said he was fit to be transferred.
We still haven't been told what's actually wrong with him. We do know due to poor care his back was damaged more but he wasn't scanned again, he was put on oxytocin and physio and that's it.
Social services also have a lot to answer for. He met a social worker once, she was meant to return but never did. A nurse from Castle Douglas hospital call me telling me I need to do this and that but I don't drive I have 3 Dogs I now have to care for but I'm expected to travel to Castle Douglas regular as well. Where my grandad resides or did it's costing a fortune as I have to keep the outside of my granddad's cabin in good condition. I was told my grandad would be in CD for a while which he will have to pay out of his basic pension to be there but he could lose his home as he has to pay a lot of money to rent the land each year and he doesn't have money. All of this due to pure care so now it's a case of waiting for my granddad to decline as this hospital won't take bloods to check the oxygen levels.
I know I'm ranting but it's really frustrating not being able to get basic info. I'm left in a position and I don't know what to do. My house isn't suitable or I'd have him there in a heartbeat. I don't know what to do, the doctors have gave us nothing in regards to what's wrong then just to throw in that my granddad's hearts not working then discharge him, it's shocking. My grandad will never have a normal life again thanks to the doctors in A and E. But the nurses on the wards were fantastic to him, we have to be grateful for that. But the elderly should not be treated this way it's disgusting.
