"A hard day made slightly easier"

About: Gynaecology / Gynaecology Assessment Unit Gynaecology / Obstetric & Gynaecology Ultrasound

(as a service user),

I attended my 12 week pregnancy scan where myself and my partner were told our baby had severe abnormalities in their brain, heart and facial features.  The Dr who spoke to us after this was kind and informative and gave us our options.  After a lot of discussion with him we knew our baby would likely not be compatible with life and we made the hardest decision of our life’s to terminate for medical reasons.

A day later one of the staff members from the ultrasound clinic phoned and checked in and I made the decision to have a surgical procedure and that our baby would be sent for genetic testing.  This member of staff was informative and kind and listened which helped so much.  Within an hour or two they had me an appointment for theatre the next day and I had a phone call from a lovely Dr (can’t remember the name) who went over the surgery, risks and what to expect.

The following day I was welcomed to the gynaecology assessment unit by a lovely nurse (again can’t remember the name) and taken to a side room where I changed into a gown.  An amazing student nurse who really was so supportive and friendly (also can’t remember name just they had blonde hair) came and took my observations and gave me a name band.  The nurse then gave me medications, I had bloods done by the most lovely anaesthetist and a full explanation of the procedure and what would happen afterwards by the Dr id spoken to on the phone the previous day.

The theatre nurses were also lovely and the surgery went well.  On return to the ward someone came and asked what my options were for after the genetic testing had been done and what I wanted to do with my baby, and another nurse came and offered me lunch both of who were so lovely.

Every single person I met in ultrasound, the gynaecology assessment unit and in theatre were honestly lovely and worth their weight in gold.  You all made what really has been a hell on earth experience so much easier and truly made me feel calm from the get go.  After a really poor experience elsewhere earlier in my pregnancy it was refreshing to feel seen, heard, not judged and treated with compassion.  I can’t thank you all enough.

Dear Kitkat1349

I can only respond from a Gynaecology Assessment Unit perspective, but am sure I share all the thoughts of the other teams involved in your care when we say that we are sorry for your loss and do appreciate how very difficult this time has been for you and your family.

We really do appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and offers of thanks to the teams involved, especially at such a difficult time.

Please be assured that you feedback has been shared with every team involved.

It is always gratifying to do a good job and when we hear that we have made things even just a little bit easier for someone then we really do take enormous pride in that fact.

I hope you are getting the support you need and we all wish you the best for the future.

Denise Marshall, Senior Charge Nurse, Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Outpatient Services, Ninewells Hospital
