I went to A&E yesterday (28/05/25) as I’m 12 weeks pregnant and was experiencing heavy bleeding. I initially called the midwife phone line, which I’d been advised to do for any minor or major issues, but after 45 minutes on hold with no answer, I hung up and called the 18 week midwife line where they told me I’d need to go to A&E where me and my baby would be looked after.
Firstly, there were 3 members of staff who were great. The person seating people and directing them to the right places, the nurse who packed me up a bag of things I really needed at the time and another nurse who took my bloods etc, she kept me at ease. I was also not waiting overly long but this, I felt, was because they didn’t actually do or say a lot.
Firstly, the nurse on the front desk, after explaining my issue, said ‘nature is cruel’. Essentially sealing my fate before I’d even been seen.
Secondly, my blood pressure and vital were recorded in the corridor in front of lots of patients where I had to explain again what my problem was. The nurse then proceeded to tell other nurses walking by so patients could overhear.
Thirdly, my bloods were then taken and I was asked to sit and wait again. When I was called the second time, I was told that my health was fine but they wouldn’t be given me a scan to check my baby. Instead I’d need to take a phone number, call them and they’d see if they could fit me in with 24/48 hours. Luckily my scan is booked for today so I could keep this appointment. But I was sent home with no info and no check to the baby.
What did they think I was going to do for 24 hours? Have a nice time? Not worry about the baby? No. My mental health is shot to pieces and I’m still hours away from my scan.
