"Great bedside manner "

About: Royal Preston Hospital

This morning my mother received a post operation debrief from one of the female doctors involved. As part of this she had to give us both good and bad news and it was not what we were hoping for. The way in which she delivered showed exemplary compassion and empathy along without absolute clarity and directness in answers where required. When you are going through a very difficult time having a doctor like this on the team makes all the difference to how the patients and family feel. In the afternoon the Consultant surgeon came to debrief my mother whilst my wife was there. Once again he also made her feel really good, less worried and made her and my wife laugh. This personal touch from both doctors is better than I have ever come across before and as well as the clear technical competence they have also shows they have bags of compassion - something I think makes all the difference in keeping patients in good mental health. My mother also states that the ward nurses have been nothing but lovely. Thank you for everything.
