"I felt genuinely heard, supported, and understood"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Diabetes Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Dietetics

(as the patient),

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the outstanding care I received during my recent appointment at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. In what has been one of the most positive healthcare experiences I’ve ever had, I felt genuinely heard, supported, and understood.

Managing my diabetes has been incredibly challenging lately, and coming into this appointment, I was feeling overwhelmed and anxious. However, from the moment I walked into the room, the doctor (Doctor MacPherson) showed such compassion and attentiveness that it immediately put me at ease. I felt that all of my concerns were not only listened to but truly acknowledged and taken seriously. It was such a relief to feel like the efforts I’ve been making—despite how difficult things have been—were recognised and appreciated.

One of the things that stood out most to me was how she made a point of involving both me and my mum in the conversation. She spoke to both of us equally, maintaining eye contact and acknowledging our thoughts and feelings throughout the consultation. That level of respect and communication meant so much to us, and it made the experience feel much more collaborative and human.

I also want to reflect on a previous appointment, when my condition had reached a more severe stage. Even then, despite the difficult conversations that had to be had, I was never made to feel ashamed or like I was being scolded. Instead, I was met with empathy, care, and reassurance—something that made all the difference in how I was able to respond and move forward. That kind of compassionate care is invaluable and has had a lasting impact on me.

The doctor I saw is truly a credit to the NHS, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had her support. The NHS should be proud to have such a skilled, empathetic, and dedicated professional on their team.

I would also like to extend my thanks to nurses Carolyn and Kathryn. Their support over the past months—through regular phone calls, sometimes as often as bi-monthly, monthly, or even weekly—has been exceptional. Their efforts and consistency do not go unnoticed, and I’m truly grateful for all they’ve done to help manage my care and provide reassurance during difficult times.

In a healthcare system where staff are under increasing pressure, it is so important to acknowledge when someone goes above and beyond. The team I’ve had the privilege of working with at Forth Valley Royal Hospital absolutely have, and I cannot thank them enough.

With sincere appreciation,

A very happy Diabetes patient
