"Post surgery care"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

We arrived for my post-surgery appointment to see my surgeon (Mr Yewlett) to have my stitches out and new dressings applied.  The appointment was in the fracture clinic and I was seen at my allocated time.

Student Nurse Lucy and Staff Nurse Tracey were excellent in the care provided.  Mr Yewlett and I discussed my operation which was a success and I was completely happy with everything.

However, the fracture clinic currently shares a waiting room with accident and emergency whilst building works are carried out.  I understand this will continue for at least another year.  There is a fit to sit policy in place.  It was shocking to see sick people attached to monitors and drips trying to sleep in chairs that are certainly not designed to sleep in.  Sick people vomiting in cardboard bowls with no privacy.  Elderly people who should have been resting in a bed not a chair.

Worst of all was the lady, who I assume must have had a serious mental problem, who was masturbating through her clothes in full view of everyone! Adults can turn a blind eye to things like this, but there were children in that waiting room too!

I don't blame the doctors and nurses. They were doing an excellent job, but whichever department of the government decided that a fit to sit policy is a good idea needs to experience it for themselves and perhaps take their elderly relative or young child there and see if it's such a good idea then.

Hi

During the 2nd phase of the Emergency department building works, the emergency department waiting room patients have been relocated to outpatients waiting room.

Unfortunately, the situation within the hospital was such that there were more patients needing admission into hospital than the number of beds available. With an increased number of patients needing admission into hospital, there is extra strain on the Emergency Department because those patients who are waiting for beds remain in the department. Space within the department is finite and this means that we have to consider the needs of every patient and make difficult decisions about how the available resources are allocated. This results in patients staying longer in our waiting rooms.

This is not an experience we want for our patients attending outpatients, however there is no other space within the hospital that outpatients or ED patients can be relocated.

The waiting room is divided in 2 and outpatients allocated to one side and ED the other. The chairs are facing as much as possible away from ED patients.

We have asked outpatients staff to work collaboratively with ED - to ensure that patients are moved quickly from the main waiting room to their smaller waiting rooms.
