"Post stroke care in the home"

About: Specialist Therapy Services / Community Stroke Team – South Notts

(as a relative),

My daughter in law suffered a major hemorrhagic stroke in March 2024. She spent 5 months in hospital and was discharged home in August 2024 but was paralysed on her right hand side and had memory; speech and cognitive problems. After care was provided by the Community Stroke Team. She received speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Her physiotherapist Bethan and her assistant Ian were exceptional. They were patient, supportive , provided training so her family could help to support her and really encouraged my daughter in law to progress. This resulted in her moving her foot for the first time in January 2025 and subsequently walk with the aid of a gutter frame and a quad walking stick. Her occupational therapist Michelle was also excellent she was very patient, encouraging and helpful. She suggested things we could introduce to enable my daughter in law to contribute to help with day to day living and was very supportive and helpful to the family. Unfortunately this service is severely stretched and so visits are limited and they usually end one year post stroke although we were allocated some extra time. The family are now left to arrange their own private physiotherapy and we do miss the visits from this team so very much

Dear Capricorn06,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience with the Community Stroke Team. We appreciate how challenging life can be following a stroke for both the stroke survivor and their loved ones.

We really appreciate the difficult journey you have been on as a family and it is good to hear about the encouragement and support you received from the team, especially, Bethan, Ian and Michelle. We agree that at times the service is extremely stretched however, I’m glad that we were able to work with your daughter in law flexibly to achieve her goals.

I will ensure that the team receive your feedback and especially Michelle, Bethan and Ian, which I know they will be pleased to hear.

We wish you well for your ongoing recovery and wellbeing.

Kind regards

Claire Lee
