About: Western Isles Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I had an appointment last month for a hip replacement. I got there on time and was prepped and ready for it and then told sorry no beds. To say I was upset was an understatement.

Got another appointment for early June waited 3hours just to be told again sorry no op there's no beds again. I'm angry now to be doing my part for this operation. If there had even been an inkling of this then getting a call or something before even having to go the hospital would have been better. Having to keep rearranging work and family everything is not feasible. I understand some of the reasons for it happening but for a hospital that was built all those years ago to serve the islands, it certainly isn't managing that at this time. Where are all the wards it opened with? I think the system really needs to be changed because the changes of recent years certainly isn't helping anyone.

Dear Catmac41

Thank you for getting in touch with us to tell us of your recent experience. I would like to offer you our sincere apologies for the delay to your treatment. This has been an ongoing problem in recent months at Western Isles Hospital, and is outwith our control.

We must always first and foremost prioritise those patients whom present in extremis and with emergency or unpredictable illness. This will unfortunately always have an impact on our elective work.

We do appreciate you contacting us, and will consider if there is a way that we can adapt our process to try and minimise the impact this has on patients like yourself.

Once again, thankyou for taking the time to contact us on Care Opinion.

Sincerely

Elizabeth Beattie

Associate Medical Director
