I've had progressive hearing loss since I was 12 and I've always been treated pretty horribly by audiologists, from being interrogated about why my hearing loss has gotten worse (I have a progressive hearing loss that runs in my family) to having audiologists talk badly about Deaf people. This had made me very anxious about audiology appointments and in particular hearing tests.
The audiologist I had yesterday was the first audiologist I ever had who treated me like not just a human being, but a deaf human being. She was friendly and bubbly, asked me what colour I wanted for my moulds (usually I have to ask!), listened to me when I asked for a different shape mould because my current ones aren't working for me, and then used hand signals to tell me which way to turn while she was making the moulds of my ears -- this is the first time an audiologist hasn't just spoken to me and expected me to fully understand while I haven't had my hearing aids in!
I actually got (positively!) emotional when I got home because I've spent over half my life being treated badly by audiologists, and this was the first time I haven't left an appointment close to (negative) tears.
I don't know what has changed here in the past 3 years but she was wonderful and I'm only sad that I didn't get her name so I could tell her department that she specifically was amazing!
"Best audiologist I've ever had!"
