I’m writing on behalf of my mum who has been on the waiting list for 2.5 years for knee replacements, she has been extremely patient with the service despite being dropped from the waiting list.
However she went for her pre-op assessment and the way the surgeon spoke to her was an absolute disgrace. The surgeon appeared to be distracted during their consultation, told her both knees were horrendous so asked her which she wanted done as doing both there was a high chance she would die under anaesthesia.
My mum's biggest fear is regarding the anaesthetic and it has taken a lot of encouragement to even get her to consider this. My mum left the consultation and burst into tears.
As a healthcare professional myself I’m disgusted at the way the surgeon spoke to her and left her feeling. She is terrified to complain for fear it will affect her care and put her further down the list. I am fully aware of the pressure on all services, but this is not the patient's fault and they must never be made to feel that way.
