"Professional, compassionate and reassuring"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology (Ward 32) Royal Alexandra Hospital / Pre-Operative Assessment

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted to ward 32 RAH for a planned operation. I have endometrial cancer and following biopsy , MRI and a discussion of my case at a Multidisciplinary Team Meeting it was proposed by my consultant Dr Gan that I have a hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries, both fallopian tubes and cervix under a general anaesthetic.

I was warmly welcomed into the ward and the process described . The nurses were professional, compassionate and reassuring from the very start of my 2 night stay until I was discharged . They were friendly and helpful . They were able to answer all questions I had in a non judgmental manner . They carried out their duties in a calm, caring manner and responded promptly to any requests .

My experience with the anaesthetist was equally caring, professional and the process was explained to me . Dr Gan has a lovely gentle  manner when she engages with her patients . Explaining the surgical process and post op care . All the staff conveyed a deep commitment to their care of patients and installed a level of confidence in me .

My bed was in a 4 bedded bay and it was very quiet and peaceful I felt very rested . The staff continued to support and reassure me that my progress was good . I was encouraged to move about walking around the ward which I did. The physio was also informative , encouraging and helpful.

Gillian, the lead gynae /oncologist nurse, visited me and confirmed too op had gone to plan . She encourages patients to keep in contact with her if I had any worries or questions . She is very approachable .

The anaesthetist , consultant and registrar also visited me post op and confirmed the op had been successful . I was very reassured following conversations with Dr Gan and Dr Pria as there were questions I wished discussed. The analgesia managed my pain and I felt listened to and encouraged to make use of painkillers to effectively keep pain under control

The staff in the pre-assessment were also thorough, helpful and informative . They too were very calm, caring and compassionate .

I thanked the staff on the ward - nurses, drs, catering for all their care of me and the other patients .
