"Attentive, diligent, kind and very thorough"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Communicable Diseases (Ward 5c)

(as the patient),

I developed sudden severe pain and swelling in my left elbow recently.  After two trips to out of hours, I was admitted to ward 5C of the QEUH Glasgow where I stayed for 7 days.  It turns out I had bursitis and cellulitis; both of which I'd never heard of before.

The staff, particularly on Ward 5C, were attentive, diligent, kind and very thorough throughout my entire stay.  It is reassuring to know that there are people out there to catch you if and when you fall through one of life's many trapdoors!

I would like to thank and name every staff member individually, though unfortunately between the exhaustion, medication (incidentally, I'd love to watch an episode of David Lynch's seminal and surreal TV show Twin Peaks while on morphine) and pain, it's sort of Mission: Impossible.  To the ones I do remember through the purple haze, in alphabetical order:

Adam

Gordie

Grace

Jen (and the nurse who was with her a lot of the time - I can't remember how to spell her name!)

Katie

Patrick

Rosie

Sam

Skye

Sophie

Stefano

Thank you to one and all and to those I couldn't remember.  You're great.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the waiting times, before being admitted to the ward.  I came into the hospital around 23:00 on the Monday and wasn't admitted to a ward until approximately 16:45 on the Tuesday; nearly seventeen hours, of which I spent less than an hour with health care professionals.  I can only hope such wait times would not adversely affect some poor, unfortunate soul in a worse condition than mines.  Minutes and hours could make a big difference to an outcome.

Dear D E K Matthew

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. We are truly grateful for your kind words and appreciation of the staff on Ward 5C. Your recognition of their attentiveness, diligence, and kindness is deeply valued, and we will ensure that your message is shared with the team—including Adam, Gordie, Grace, Jen, Katie, Patrick, Rosie, Sam, Skye, Sophie, Stefano, and the others who contributed to your care.

We understand that being in hospital can be a challenging experience, and we are pleased that our staff were able to support you during your stay. Your words about "falling through life’s trapdoors" and feeling reassured by the team really highlight the impact compassionate care can have, and we are so pleased you felt looked after.

We also acknowledge the concerns you raised regarding your waiting time before admission. We appreciate your honesty and recognise that long waits can be frustrating and potentially concerning for patients. We are continually working to improve patient flow and reduce waiting times wherever possible.

We hope that you are recovering well.

Best wishes

Nicole
