"Took the time to explain things to us as they were happening"

About: Maternity care / Consultant Led Unit Victoria Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I was admitted to the consultant led unit for an augmentation (waters broken) during a very long pre labour. We arrived at shift change but were made quickly comfortable and introduced to our nurse overnight - Steffi. She was absolutely brilliant and helped us feel immediately at ease.

We had originally wanted a home birth, but had made the decision to have an augmentation to help progress labour. Steffi was very knowledgeable and helped us to make decisions as things changed overnight.

We ended up delivery our baby the following day via emergency c-section after an epidural that unfortunately did not work completely, and although this was far from our expected labour and delivery (we had planned for a home birth), the team were fantastic and we felt every decision leading up to the section was the right one for us!

The consultant and theatre team were absolutely fantastic and helped us through the surgery and helped us managed our worries. Our anesthesiologist (I have unfortunatley forgotten her name) took the time to explain things to us as they were happening and helped us with our breathing exercises to keep us calm as we were exhausted and I did experience some anxiety pre surgery. The lovely theatre team also took lots of photos for us which has been amazing to look back at.

Our care post op was also fantastic, and the staff helped me to breastfeed while I was still in recovery as this was something I had really wanted to do.

On the maternity ward, they staff were great at checking in on myself post op and our son also. They helped me further with breastfeeding and assisted with latching and holding while feeding. As new parents we were still exhausted so having the support of the all the staff was brilliant and helped me initiate breastfeeding well!

Congratulations Sammy93 on the birth of your son.

That was a significant change from your original wish for a homebirth to then requiring an emergency section! A lot for you both to get your head around.

I am so pleased to hear that despite this being far from what you had planned that you still felt informed and supported to make the right decisions for you and your situation. Sharing your journey can assist so many others.

I will share your kind words with Steffi I am sure she will be delighted you took the time to think of her during an exhausting time with a newborn.

Don't worry you cant remember the name of your anesthetist, what I can do is share with the Clinical lead and she will share with all the team. I will do the same for the theatre and maternity observation teams. I'm pleased you received the support and guidance from the ward staff to aid your breast feeding getting off to the best start, I will share your appreciation with the team.

Take Care
