"5* Midwives"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital

(as the patient),

Labour was always the great unknown for me. While I had an open mind about my birth plan, I had always pictured a natural delivery — a C-section wasn’t part of the image. But, as we all learn, birth has its own ideas.

On the day, I was introduced to my midwife, Anna, and her student, Charis. I’ll admit, when I first saw their young, fresh faces, I had a flicker of panic — was I old enough to be their mum? As a "geriatric" first-time mum (a title I’ve never loved), I was understandably nervous and unsure of what lay ahead.

But from the moment we met, Anna and Charis put me completely at ease. Their warmth, professionalism, and genuine care shone through. They treated me as a person, not just a patient — we shared stories, laughed (a lot), and found a natural connection that made me feel like I’d known them for years.

Anna, though only a year into her career, radiated calm, confidence, and capability. She supported and guided Charis with such grace and generosity, creating a learning environment that was both empowering and nurturing. It was a joy to witness their dynamic. Anna didn’t just instruct — she led by example, always gaining my consent, explaining each step with clarity, and inviting Charis to be hands-on in a respectful, considered way.

And Charis? She is a natural. Thoughtful, intuitive, eager to learn, and clearly committed to the highest standards of care — she has all the qualities that define an exceptional midwife in the making. Her attentiveness, emotional intelligence, and willingness to engage so meaningfully stood out in every interaction. Under Anna’s mentorship, she is thriving, and I have no doubt that Charis will go on to make an incredible impact in this field. The Aberdeen Maternity Unit is lucky to have her.

As my labour progressed and the situation became more complex, I felt exhausted, emotional, and in pain — especially after five failed epidural attempts. In those intense moments, Anna’s presence grounded me. Her ability to bring calm and even lightness into the room — especially when my wife attempted (badly timed) humour — was invaluable. She helped me find strength when I was running on empty.

As a police officer, I know that true people skills can’t be taught — and both Anna and Charis have them in abundance. They made me feel seen, heard, and completely cared for at every stage. Though they left at 7 p.m., before our baby was born by C-section at 9:17 p.m., they had already left an enormous impression on us.

The next day, when Anna found us and returned with Charis to meet our baby, I was overwhelmed. That small act of kindness made me feel incredibly valued — it was a moment I’ll never forget. I even captured a photo of them holding her, which I’ll treasure forever.

I’ve told everyone who’ll listen about these two wonderful women. Anna — you are an outstanding midwife. And Charis — you are already on the path to becoming one. Your future in midwifery is bright, and I’m excited for the many lives you will go on to support, comfort, and inspire.

With heartfelt thanks for the exceptional care, kindness, and humanity you both gave us in our most vulnerable hours.
