"A very rude nurse"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I brought my son to A&E as he was in a lot of pain with his testicle. Upon arrival we were seen by the triage nurse who was very helpful and kind. Then we were told to go wait in the purple zone where they would give my son some pain killers while he waited.

Along came the nurse who was to give him his pain killers and after doing so they suggested to give him a heated compact. I asked them if it was ok to apply heat to testicles and they abruptly turned their back to us and said it's up to us if we want to but to suit ourselves, and carried on walking.

I mean I hate hospitals as it is but this was another level.

Dear Patient,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your experience of the Emergency Department (ED) and Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI).

The senior leadership team at MRI ED were sorry to read that you were spoken to in this manner. We believe that our patients and their families deserve to be shown respect and kindness at what can often be an already stressful time. We want to make sure that our patients, carers and families, feel comfortable asking questions and we understand the importance of providing clear instructions around delivering care at home. This interaction falls well below the standards of behaviour that we expect.

To reduce the chances of something similar happening again, we will share your feedback to the clinical team during staff huddles, explaining the importance of treating our service users with respect.

Please accept our sincere apologies for this experience. If you wish to speak with someone directly, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on telephone 0161 276 8686, or email pals@mft.nhs.uk, quoting reference number PO25/00004, they will do their best to address your concerns.

Kind regards,

Patient Experience Team
