"My husband's final journey - Palliative Care"

About: Adult Health Services / District Nursing Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre / Palliative Care Hospices in Scotland Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Palliative care

(as a service user),

A diagnosis of terminal liver cancer was given to my husband in November 2023.   The only criticism of the health care provided to my husband was the time it took to reach his diagnosis.  The care provided by the Beatson, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Ardgowan Hospice and all Inverclyde HSCP services were amazing.  John, Gemma, Jacqui and Anne Marie and Lindsay at Ardgowan Hospice were outstanding, showing respect to his cultural needs and considering him in every way possible.  So many others at Ardgowan Hospice went out of their way for my husband, I will never forget the kindness shown to us all.  Gavin the Head Cook was amazing too.

Inverclyde HSCP provided excellent care.   The Palliative Care team - Jacqui/Linda, Mairi/Christine became part of our family and stood by us through some very difficult and stressful days.  Claire's District Nurse team were in daily contact and Anne was a huge support to us.   Partners that Care, HSCP Carers, Dr Hogan's practice all helped us.  The endless aids provided by Craig at Inverclyde Centre for Independent Living were adapted for every stage of my husband's journey.

After nursing him at home for many months, a second emergency admission to Ardgowan Hospice was needed as I had to be admitted to hospital.  Sadly he died peacefully in Ardgowan Hospice in May this year.  We are indebted to Ardgowan Hospice for the guidance, advice, love and care shown to my husband, myself and my family.

Dear devoted wife

I am so sorry to read about the death of your husband and would like to take this opportunity to send condolences to you and your family. I would also like to thank you so much for taking the time to send us such lovely, heartfelt feedback.

As the Chief Nurse for Inverclyde HSCP I am so pleased to hear that the care your husband and family received was excellent and that you felt so well supported by all of our teams. My colleagues and I work hard to ensure that all of the services across Inverclyde work together to support people at the end of their lives, and it means a lot to us to know that you have benefitted from this.

Your feedback has been shared with the teams and staff that you have mentioned across the HSCP and Ardgowan hospice, to ensure they know how much of a difference their kindness and caring meant to you all.

Many thanks again for taking the time to get in touch with us at this very sad time. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any support

My name is Debbie Maloney, and I am Service Manager for Access and Rehabilitation Services for Inverclyde HSCP.

I am so sorry to read about the death of your husband. Please accept my condolences for you and the family.

Thank you for your kind words at such a difficult time, regarding the aids from Inverclyde Centre for Independent Living.

It's especially meaningful when it recognises the dedication of our support staff, whose hard work often happens behind the scenes but makes a real difference to the people of Inverclyde. Craig is sincerely grateful that you took the time to share your appreciation.

Best wishes

Debbie
