"Postpartum at assessment unit cah"

About: Maternity care / Maternity Admission/Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

At 10 days post elective section I took a fever and felt unwell and attended the assessment unit with my new born and was given antibiotics and sent home (before receiving blood results). I was contacted the next day by a doctor to say my infection markers were high and to return to get bloods re done the following day- these results were communicated 3 days later and I had to go back again and thankfully the levels had returned to normal (seen on the new app).

At 5 weeks pp I got the same symptoms again, again I sat in the corridor at the assessment unit for 3 hours with my new born (trying to breastfeed) to get bloods re done and sent home with the advice that they would call me if I needed treatment. My symptoms did not improve and I called back 2 days later to be told my infection levels were slightly high again but a doctor was yet to review them and to get any treatment I would have to go back yet again!

Despite all staff being kind and friendly my over all experience has been very disappointing considering I had to chase results several times and communication took several days each time! I also feel like having to wait in a corridor where the public is in and out in close proximity, with a new born is very impractical, uncomfortable and not suitable for a new born or newly post partum mum.

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your baby, I hope you and your baby are doing well now. Many thanks for taking the time to respond, we do welcome all feedback to help us improve the service we offer.

I am extremely saddened to read of your experience in Craigavon assessment unit and that your blood test results were not followed up and communicated with you as expected. As a trust we strive to ensure the highest standard of care and I can only apologize that this was not your experience. I also acknowledge that there is limited waiting area space for the admission and assessment unit and I am sorry that the facilities did not meet your needs.

If you would like me to look into the details of your attendances at the admission and assessment unit please email me at oonagh.campbellkelly@southerntrust.hscni.net and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Kind regards

Oonagh Campbell Kelly

Interim Lead Midwife.
