I was diagnosed with breast cancer (ER/PR+ Her 2 negative: two tumours with node involvement) in November 2023, following initial contact with the breast care service in February 2023 due to cysts. Although I was informed two of the three cysts were deemed non-urgent, and would not need any further follow-up, I returned to my GP in September with concerns about slight nipple inversion.
Unfortunately, the referral to the breast care team at Ninewells did not meet the two-week target outlined in NICE guidelines. There was a lengthy wait for an operation due to waiting lists once all scans required had been reviewed at MDT.
However, once under the care of Mr. Munnoch and the specialist nurse practitioners, I received outstanding support. The team provided clear, compassionate communication and were available to address my ongoing concerns (and many many questions!). After careful consideration of my options, I underwent a DIEP flap reconstruction in January 2024.
Despite experiencing a post-operative infection, the response was prompt and effective. The follow-up care has been exceptional. The reconstruction nurses are highly professional, knowledgeable, skilled, but also very sensitive and caring. Mr. Munnoch and his team have been exemplary from start to finish. Their expertise and empathy gave me confidence and reassurance during one of the most difficult times in my life. I am deeply grateful for their care and support.
