"Excellent efficient care"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical/Surgical Ambulatory Care Unit

(as a service user),

I had a probable allergic reaction to antibiotics this morning. Despite living with allergies for many years, I had not had an episode like this and wanted to be checked out to ensure it did not escalate.

I phoned NHS24, spoke to a caller and a clinician who advised that I attend A&E at University Hospital Hairmyres. I was expected at the department which meant that I had a swift triage and bloods taken by Gordon.

Both staff were very courteous and explained what was to happen. I was ultimately seen by Registered Nurse Stacy, who made me comfortable, allayed my anxieties about a high blood glucose and made sure I was fed and watered bearing in mind that breakfast was not a high priority for me earlier in the day.

I was seen by ANP Heather who was excellent, advised my bloods were fine and suggested, after discussion, that I have a change of antibiotic. I was concerned that I had attended A&E unnecessarily however this feeling was quickly dispelled.

Dear emmemmcee

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your recent allergic reaction. I am pleased to read that you were swiftly triaged, then Gordon took bloods from you and Stacey was able to make you comfortable and reduce some of your anxiety.

You were then seen by Heather for a full assessment. Your positive comments will be shared with each of the staff mentioned as well as the wider team. Thank you again.

It is sometimes difficult for individuals to know when to attend the A&E department, however it is always important to do so when the situation is a concern or not the 'normal' presentation. It is good to read that staff also reassured you of this.

I hope that you are feeling better and wish you all the best going forward

Kind regards

Lise
