After a bit of a wait from referral (6 months), I came into the Endoscopy Unit for a colonoscopy in the morning and was greeted kindly at reception. A little while later I was taken through to a room to discuss the test, where I got the option of sedation or Entonox (I chose sedation).
I was quite apprehensive, more so of the test itself, due to past trauma, but all the nurses were particularly professional, pleasant, kind and reassuring. I'm terrible with names, but Jenna, I believe, got my cannula in, no issue, and in no time.
The professional doing my test, Claire, was exceptionally professional, reassuring and kind, it caught me off guard. I haven't had anyone medically give me the great dignity, care and respect she did. It helped calm me a lot when my mind otherwise struggles with flashbacks.
There were also Margo and Gill who were in the procedure room, but didn't make me feel too uncomfortable despite the nature of the test.
Claire guided me through everything and told me what was happening and what could be seen throughout, which again, just really helped me to feel present and okay. I also personally didn't find it too uncomfortable, which is likely a testament to their skill and not solely the sedation/pain relief.
They kept me as covered as possible throughout, and took their time to gently make sure I didn't feel overwhelmed. Jenna looked after me again, and the time went by quickly, she checked up on me, and went through my results and leaflet, and removed my cannula, and even was kind enough to get me a cup of tea.
I really commend this team, everyone that I came across was pleasant and professional and kind, even though I can't remember everyone's name. I'm really grateful for making the experience the best it possibly could be, and I truly think it is one of/if not the finest example of an NHS department within Scotland. I can't thank the team enough.
Thanks again.
"Very thankful to all the staff"
