Accompanied my dad who is in his 80's for endoscopy.
Gave my contact details at front desk and dad was then called by nurse into side room to answer some questions. I went to accompany him but was told to wait outside unless dad couldn't speak for himself. However as I had list of meds required ( and as power of attorney for elderly relative) I expected to be involved. I had to give meds to nurse then leave.
Dad wasn't even asked if he wanted me there. I know this was not the procedure with a different nurse and different patients as I saw patients relatives being included. We then waited in another area before leaving him to get procedure.
It was quite embarrassing for me to have to walk back to seat and made me feel like I had been given a telling off for only accompanying relative. I know questions are sometimes personal but dad wasn't given option to include me, and there's aspects like meds he struggles with. It is important to involve the family and is comforting for patient too to have them there. Others were able to have this.
