"The staff are all one in a million!!"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Imaging (Xrays and Scans) Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Paediatric surgery ( Wards 3A & 3B)

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had been suffering from a football injury last year & after speaking to Physio he was referred for an MRI at Queen Elizabeth sick kids hospital.

The MRI took place, then we had received call asking us to attend the next day to discuss the MRI results.

We attended, to be advised my son had a significant tear to his meniscus & the surgeon was looking to operate the following morning.

This came as a shock to us all as we weren’t expecting the news we got & as our son hadn’t really been suffering just more niggle every now & again & probably the fittest he had been & doing so well in his football we were shocked.

Both surgeon Mr Smith & trauma liaison officer Janine were fantastic, they advised us to go home have a think about what had been discussed & Janine would call later that afternoon.

Janine called back & it was arranged for surgery to take place the next day.

Mr Smith & Janine met us the next morning talked through what was going to happen that day & what would happen after the surgery had taken place.

My son got settled in his room for his surgery & Janine checked in on him making sure he was fine & if there was any questions he had she could help answer.

The porter arrived to take him to the operating theatre & he was lovely, chatted to us along the way making sure we where at ease until we reached the theatre & met the anisettes & again she was lovely she laughed & joked with my son, putting him at ease & making sure he was comfortable.

The surgery went very well & a few hours later he in was the recovery ward.

The nurses who came to fetch us -  Leanne & another lady -  were brilliant too they had been with my son after surgery, making sure he was fine & came too ok.

We got him back to the ward to rest & later that evening we spoke with the doctors, nurses & physio who again were all brilliant!!

Mr Smith & team, including physio Scott who spent time with my son on a couple of occasions, was really patient & explained things really well to help with rehabilitation, the nursing team where excellent too, Gayle who took my son's stitches out also brilliant, she made him feel comfortable, took her time & stopping to check he was ok!!

After surgery as my son was non weight bearing & in brace my point of contact was Janine was just amazing throughout, she helped with any queries I had, anything I was unsure of Janine was there to help assist & guide me, Janine helped with emails for school , she was so supportive throughout the full process & we can’t thank her enough!!

Having the trauma liaison team is a great idea & really helpful for parents too, without Janine I would have been lost!!

My son is now officially signed off by Mr Smith who has been a fantastic surgeon & has been great in explaining & making sure our boy was safe hands again we can’t thank him enough of taking care of our boy!

The staff are all one in a million!!

The experience from start to end has been tremendous!!

Dear smcm

Thank you so much for taking the time to get in touch via Care Opinion.

We are sorry to hear about the unexpected nature of your son's diagnosis and the shock it must have caused your family. However, we are pleased to know that despite the circumstances, your experience with our team—from the initial MRI to the surgery and post-operative care—was a positive one.

Your kind words about Mr. Smith, Janine, Scott, Gayle, Leanne, and the wider surgical, nursing, and physiotherapy teams mean a great deal. We are proud to hear that they provided compassionate, clear, and supportive care throughout what must have been a very stressful time. It is especially heartening to hear how Janine’s support made such a difference to you and your son—her dedication to families is truly valued.

We are delighted to hear that your son has now been signed off and is doing well. We wish him all the very best in his continued recovery and return to football.

Take Care

Nicole
