"Gives comfort and support in the darker days"

About: Specialist Nursing Services / Community Matrons, NNE

(as a service user),

Katharine - Community Matron

In October 2023 I collapsed and was diagnosed with sepsis. After discharge in December 2023 i was referred to Katharine. Since then she has been a regular visitor to my home as I am housebound after a second bout of sepsis February - April 2024.

She carries out health checks, reviews my medication, arranges blood tests and liases with my GP and hospital consultants as necessary. In short she she covers a lot of work in place of our GP. I now have heart failure CICD, poor blood count, severe pain and limited mobility, following the 2nd bout of sepsis. I was frail and depressed  and was unable to understand the whole picture.

Katharine arranged a home visit from a care of the elderly consultant who enables me to understand how each of my problems affected another. No-one had considered this referral before Katharine did. As a result of this I had some new medication which has helped greatly.

Katharine continues to bring me an exceptional level of care and above all a sense of hope into my life.

She has also given me great comfort by the way she supports my wife, who is my sole carer. She gives comfort and support in the darker days and is continuously enabling us the cope with a very different and difficult life.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback on the excellent care you received from your Community Matron, Katharine. It is vitally important for us to get feedback from our patients to help us understand both what works well and if any changes are needed to our service. I have shared your feedback with Katharine, the Community Matron team, and our senior leadership. It is heart warming to hear that the service is so vitally important to you and your wife - thank you for sharing your story.
