"Fracture of the femur"

About: ICST (Community Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy) / ICST (Community Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy) East Kilbride Stonehouse Hospital University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

An accidental fall.

Helped into Hairmyres hospital in a wheelchair.

Initial x-rays showed no breakage but the inability to put weight on the injured leg I was to have another x-ray which showed that my leg was fractured.

I remained in A&E for two nights  There were no beds in the wards.

In great deal of pain I was transferred to Wishaw Hospital where I had major surgery to secure the bone.

Using the steady and with the staff help I managed to the toilet.

With the help of the Physio I tried walking with the pulpit apparatus.

After two days I was moved to Stonehouse rehab hospital.

Here with the help of nurse, physiotherapists I made a gradual recovery.

When after around four weeks I could look after myself I was taken home.

I couldn’t have had better care in this hospital.

Since being at home I have had Physiotherapy twice a week. This treatment has been extremely beneficial because of the care and attention given by the physiotherapist.

At present I am able to walk unaided though not as successful as it should be as there is plenty of exercising still to do.

Dear violetpw89

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience after falling and fracturing your leg. You have clearly been through a difficult time and I am pleased to read that you are now at home.

I am however sorry that you had such a long wait in the A&E department and that you were in a great deal of pain. This is not the standard of care we strive to deliver and my sincere apologies are extended to you.

The pressures in NHS Lanarkshire in terms of availability of beds for patients to be admitted does continue. We recognise that this is far from ideal and again apologise for the distress this caused.

It is clear from your feedback that you have worked very hard in your rehabilitation and you are continuing to do so with the support of physiotherapy.

I will share your feedback with the various teams involved in your care. They will be delighted to read that you are doing so well.

Thank you again

Wishing you all the best in your continued recovery

Kind regards

Lise

Dear violetpw89,

Thank you for getting in touch about your experience. I am sorry to hear you endured a fractured femur and subsequent surgery, however I am glad to hear you are on the mend and making good progress, through your stay at University Hospitals Hairmyres and Wishaw, Stonehouse Hospital, and now at home.

I am very pleased that your Physiotherapy visits are helping and that their guidance has you headed in the right direction. Seeing people progress really is a highlight of our job so I am sure your physio will be delighted at your steady progress and your commitment. Wishing you the very best as you continue to work with your physio towards your mobility goals.

All the best,

Therese.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your journey and experience with us.

It is good to hear that despite the challenges you have faced following your Femur fracture that you have felt well supported throughout your recovery - especially during your time with us at Stonehouse Rehab Hospital. I am so pleased to know that the care provided by the Physiotherapy team, alongside our nursing colleagues has contributed to your recovery and helped you work towards regaining your independence.

We know that this rehabilitation journey doesnt stop on discharge from hospital and its great to hear that you are recieving Physiotherapy support at home and continuing with your exercises.

Thanks again for taking the time to acknowledge the care of the whole team. Wishing you continued progress as you move forward in your recovery.

Hello Therese

I must add that I would not have achieved the progress I have made without the excellent help and encouragement from the physiotherapist from your department.

Thank you, violetpw89, that's really brilliant to hear. I have passed your comments on to the team and I am sure this will be a welcome boost for them. I am so glad you are benefitting from the physio's care and expertise, with a dollop of 'hard graft' from yourself. Well done and thank you again.

Best wishes,

Therese.
