"Upsetting experiences on the neurology ward"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Neurology

(as the patient),

I felt neglected, there were times I wasn’t offered food. Most of the staff I met were rude.

I am now suffering from PTSD since my last hospital stay. I was in for a month. An international nurse came in at 6 o'clock in the morning and proceeded to put the blood pressure cuff on me. Then she was distracted by another nurse and they proceeded to speak in their own language in front of me.

She then pulled the blood pressure cuff off me and she was going to write down the previous patients blood pressure reading as mine. She did not take my blood pressure. I then questioned her and she said she did and I responded with “no you didn’t it did not go tight”, she let out a big sigh and put it back on then said “there” and ripped it off my arm.

Bearing in mind I was in hospital with a serious brain infection, she did not take my temperature. I told a senior member of staff about it and they just smirked at me. I also was questioned lots of times when I asked for anti-sickness medication. A nurse said to me once “do you know it’s quite addictive?” Bearing in mind I was having iv antibiotics going through my system most of the day and they were making me very nauseous.

Another incident that happened was a care assistant followed me to the bathroom, I was wondering why but I just went along with it. I then started to undress as I was going for a shower. I could see the care assistant's eye looking in at me through the gap in the door. As you can imagine it was the quickest shower of my life.

To cut a long story short, it turns out she was following the wrong patient and was meant to be watching a lady who was in with seizures. I felt like I was going crazy. My biggest worry is for the patients who don’t have a voice and cannot speak up for themselves.
