"The pain therapy and education was transformative"

About: Falkirk Community Hospital / Pain Management Service

(as a service user),

Following an Achilles tendon injury I developed CRPS in my foot and became mentally very ill. Simultaneously previous pain in both elbows returned. In June 2022 I began pain management therapy at Falkirk Community Hospital (NHS Forth Valley) with Sigrun.

At the time I could only walk 3 minutes twice a day, could not even hold a book to read and experienced regular set-backs from pain flare-ups. I had withdrawn from family and most of my friends and relied on my husband’s care.

After a very tearful slow start the pain therapy and education was transformative. Importantly it was underpinned by 6 months of psychological therapy from Sara (NHS Forth Valley).

Gradually my pain reduced. After 2 years I was able to walk an hour regularly and occasionally do a hill walk as well as working in the garden. My social life had significantly improved, and I was able to share more domestic responsibilities.

In the last year I have resumed more social activities and been abroad once. Not being able to resume my normal level of physical and mental activities is frustrating. There are still ups and downs in mental health and pain and I continue applying what I have learned from the therapies.

It is reassuring that I have been referred for further assessment. I am immensely grateful to Sigrun and Sara for their dedication in literally getting me back on my feet and I greatly value the continuing support from the NHS Forth Valley Pain Management Service.
