"Excellent care"

About: Acute Medical Unit / Ward 4 - Acute Medical Receiving

(as the patient),

Just wanted to highlight some excellent care I received from the ward 4 team recently.

I was admitted with an asthma attack/ chest infection & the care from the staff was impeccable.

Particularly from nurses Janna and Kelsey whose compassion, humour and empathy made me feel so safe & at ease despite feeling so unwell.

They are an asset to nursing and I can see how hard they work - they advocated for me frequently and made me feel calm when I was panicking about my breathing.

Laura the CN did fantastic at getting a cannula in my tricky veins & made me laugh with her witty sense of humour.

The consultant, Doctor Embley, was also incredible, he had a very calming relaxed presence & was able to answer my various questions appropriately. He really listened to me as an individual and took time make a plan with me instead of just about me.

He was excellent at communicating his plans and was consistent in coming back to re-review me despite it being a weekend.

Dr Cadden also saw me and was pleasant, kind and was very rigorous in the initial assessment/testing for me.

Fraser and Rosie and Jaz, the doctors on the nightshift team when I first came in were also very lovely & clearly are competent and compassionate doctors - I was seen within 5 mins of being on the ward due to my observations & I was impressed at how quickly they responded to seeing me and making an initial plan. Rosie also offered to sit with me when I was upset & getting my nebulisers & I realise how busy she was - I thought this was really sweet of her.

Ruth the respiratory nurse specialist was also wonderful & took a long time to sit with me and make a personalised plan about my ongoing asthma care & explained a lot to me - she’s clearly very knowledgeable in her job & is really competent & person centred in her care.

All of the various HCA and wider nursing team were cheery, kind and despite me being independent they were always popping in to make sure I had everything I needed, fresh water, coffee, towels etc. shout out to Lesa who was a total gem and made me chuckle a lot.

On the whole, everyone genuinely made me feel like my concerns were listened to and that I wasn’t the asthma attack in bed XYZ - I felt cared for as an individual & it’s clear person centred care is at the focus of ward 4's ethos.

Thanks again team and thanks for making me feel better.
