"Very professional, knowledgeable and friendly"

About: Western General Hospital / Renal Dialysis Unit

(as the patient),

Nurses are all very professional, knowledgeable, friendly and always happy to help.

Unit is in a newish build providing a pleasant environment (although it can get a bit cold). Privacy when discussing condition/treatment with doctors and nurses is lacking. Toast is provided for morning patients which is very welcome and much appreciated but the sandwiches provided at other times are awful (please change suppliers).

Access could be improved a great deal if cars and taxis could use one of the 2 available access points on Crewe Road.  This would also reduce taxi costs for the NHS considerably for patients travelling from that side of town.

All in all the staff in this unit make the extremely challenging process of dialysis treatment a much more tolerable experience than it could be.

Thank you for taking the time to describe your experience in the Dialysis Unit, I have passed on your praise to the Nursing team which was well received.

Any feedback where we can improve our service is also welcomed and your points regarding; access, sandwiches, privacy and temperature are absolutely valid and I will try to address them:

The route for vehicles through the WGH changed to a one-way system some years ago and unfortunately this is to be permanent. The reasons this changed were for Health & Safety due to the width of the road and increased flow of traffic.

Regarding the sandwiches, I have spoken to the Catering manager and these are provided as part of a national contract for NHS in Scotland and this is not something we can change locally. I will see if we can have more of the rolls that many patients do like and therefore reduce wastage.

Our new building is a vast improvement on the portacabin we moved out from in June 2021 and it's positive to hear you find it a pleasant environment, I think the majority of patients and staff feel the same. With much more space between each dialysis station than before the matter of privacy has certainly improved, however, I will remind staff to be mindful of patient confidentiality during conversations. If you wish to have a more private discussion there is a consulting/treatment room which we can use for this purpose.

Finally, please do ask for more blankets if you are cold, the air conditioning can only be set within certain boundaries and it is important you feel comfortable during your treatment.

Thank you again for your feedback, it is very much appreciated.
