About: Western General Hospital / General Surgery Western General Hospital / High Dependency Unit Western General Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I recently had to have a major operation at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh for cancer and just wanted to say how amazing all the staff were in the care and compassion especially as I was a distance from home.

After I got moved out of the HDU (staff were great in there too) I went to ward 56 where I stayed until I was discharged home. I had a few ups and down in my recovery but despite the challenges within the NHS at the current time,  I was never made to feel like a nuisance for asking for anything and staff were all very kind and caring and even going out of their way to get me something that I could eat.

Special thanks to ward 56 staff: Barry, Charlie, Michael and Lorraine (nurse practitioner) who helped me through my operation and immediate post operative recovery. They helped make a difficult time that bit easier.

I would also like to thank Professor Mariappan and his team again for all they did as without their surgical skills and care I would not be here today. Also Diane the Specialist Nurse was always there offering her expert knowledge and putting mine and my family’s mind at ease.

I am now home and recovering well thanks to the team!

Dear Moss22,

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us on Care Opinion.

I am pleased to hear that you had such a positive experience at the Western General Hospital. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to go through a major operation, especially being away from home, so it is fantastic to know that the team delivered the care you needed with such kindness and compassion, and that their support helped to ease what must have been a very challenging time for you and your family.

I have shared your kind comments with the teams involved in your care, and they will be delighted to hear about the positive impact their efforts made to your experience.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your valuable feedback, and I wish you all the very best on your recovery journey.

Best wishes,

Ana Mezzomo
