"Absolutely no warmth or empathy"

About: South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a service user),

I woke at 2.30am having severe, fiery itching all over my body.  This is an allergy response I've had before, and is the onset of anaphylaxis. I took antihistamine tablets, hoping the symptoms would subside, but instead I felt my blood pressure drop (dizziness), my chest tighten, and tingling in my mouth and lips. I phoned 999.

I am in my 70s, living on my own, but have 4 dogs.  At this time my roof is being replaced, so my home (a modest, terraced house) is surrounded by scaffolding, and the front garden is littered with building materials.

The paramedics knocked on the door, and the dogs started barking.  I opened the door and was asked to put the dogs in a separate room.  This was beyond my capability - I was dizzy and weak.  So they agreed to see me in the ambulance instead. They walked off with no concern about my ability to walk.

In the ambulance they proceeded to bombard me with questions, adhering to their clinical protocols, but with no personal or  compassionate communication at all.  I couldn't understand why they were treating me this way. When I objected to their tone and coldness they became angry, the tone became more assertive.

I only tolerated physical observations because I was still struggling with weakness and a wheeze in my lungs.  As I tried to understand why they were treating me so disrespectfully, I realised they may have thought my home was in disrepair (scaffolding) and dirty (rubbish in the garden).   I volunteered the information that I am having work done on my roof.  One of the paramedics said are you doing it yourself? I was so taken aback, as a small, older woman to be asked that question.

They said my observations were not at my baseline level, slightly low blood pressure and sats, and a possible irregularity on ECG, but it was up to me whether I went to hospital. I felt just well enough to choose to go home.

I still feel shaky and a little concerned now, but not sure whether it is due to physical symptoms or the hurt from being treated so horribly by SW Ambulance Service.  Absolutely no warmth or empathy.
