GP carried out a home visit to our elderly mother who had been experiencing distressing symptoms. Throughout the consultation, he had her well being at the centre, giving her autonomy and decision making whilst providing a balance between effective symptom management and quality of life. He was a skilled communicator and was compassionate but honest. He provided very clear information in a way that could be understood by her and us, her family in attendance, so she could make an informed decision about next steps and future options. He made us feel like he had all the time in the world for us, even though he must have a very busy work schedule. He explained each and every medication, alongside explaining various medical test results in such a way that was easily comprehensible. At the end of the consultation, our mother commented how lucky she felt that the young doctor had visited and how pleased she was to be a patient at this surgery. We, her family, are in full agreement and are reassured to know she is in such good hands.
