My daughter went to Cramlington hospital to give birth, as it is the hospital nearest to us. She was admitted in the early hours after contacting the maternity department, as her labour pains were coming quickly and she was struggling with the pain(she is a young mum and this was her first baby). After they tried to fob us off(and failed),they eventually relented and allowed us to come in to get her checked over. I think they thought she was exaggerating about the pain and the contractions but she was in fact several centimetres dilated and progressing fast. When she got to the birthing unit the staff there were good, I cannot fault them. However, after waiting forever to get on the maternity ward, the experience there was very different. The staff were not supportive or caring at all. They were pushing the breastfeeding(no change there), gave my daughter a quick "do this, not that' as if she was a 5yr old and then she was left to get on with it! She requested pain medication and was left waiting for over an hour, only for a different nurse to return without any pain medication and go off again and the same scenario to repeat. She had extensive stitching so was in a lot of discomfort, she bled through on several occasions but nobody bothered to clean up the bed or give her extra pads to put underneath her. When they came to check the baby over, the nurse didn't listen to my daughter, turned her back on her and acted as if she wasn't even there. She didn't do her job properly(as she was such a cocky madam) and scared my daughter by saying the baby had a heart murmur...he did not! When my daughter was advised she could leave the maternity ward and go home(she couldn't wait to get out of there) we waited hours for them to complete discharge papers(bearing in mind I had been up for over 57 hours straight and had to drive us home). I went looking for someone to see what was happening and was greeted with a mouthful from the nurse in charge, who said she had more important things to do than discharge us. I found this ironic considering they were so desperate for beds, so I assumed getting us discharged would be a good thing(apparently not). There was no need for this attitude and considering several nurses were standing around chatting and doing nothing, a bit of a joke really. This hospital has posters plastered all over stating 'Respect Our Staff' but the total lack of respect for patients is disgraceful. What should have been a joyful experience was ruined by the uncaring, condescending and down right rude staff in this hospital. What a horrible place to bring a new life into this world.
"Direspectful and condescending ward staff "
