"I felt like I was forgotten about"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

(as a service user),

Went to A&E on out of hours GP recommendation and concern it was anaphylaxis.

At A&E I was sent through to the doctor station, where it seemed like everyone ignored me, then told me to stand in a hallway until I got triaged. (No chairs in sight or offered, I’m disabled) A nurse tried to move me back to the waiting area until I explained a doctor told me to wait there.

Shift changeover happened and I was forgotten about. My throat continuing to get tighter. Another nurse appeared and told me to move and I had to explain again, they went to ask a doctor and was never seen again.

Eventually even I got to speak to a doctor who was helpful after learning my throat was tight, my tongue swollen and stinging, my head dizzy/fuzzy, and my heart rate higher than normal. I eventually got triaged and they gave me an EpiPen after 2.5hours.

The head nurse confirmed with a doctor that my symptoms were in fact anaphylaxis. They put me in a cubicle for a doctor to see me and get blood tests. A nurse showed up with blood kit but left again and never came back. A different doctor then came and moved me out of the cubicle, all while I was shaking and could barely stand from the adrenaline.

My blood pressure was now sky high and I was put back in the hallway. After an hour in the hallways again the nurse who was supposed to take my blood walked past and I asked if that was happening and they didn’t know. I asked do I need to be seen with a doctor or would it be safe to go home among other questions, and they only responded by telling me I could go home if I want.

So I left the hospital and eventually got a call at 3:30am asking if I left. The nurse had not updated the records like they said they would that I was gone.

Now my visit notes were updated.

The notes said I had airway obstruction and palpitations. I did not at any time state I had palpitations, and no other symptoms were listed.

Overall a horrendous time when I was struggling to breathe and then inaccurate information recorded which may result in incorrect treatment in future.
