"I felt genuinely cared for"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 2 (Emergency Surgical) Victoria Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted to Victoria Hospital with a serious urological emergency. I was passing a large amount of blood instead of urine; it was frightening, urgent, and deeply distressing. After initial treatment, I was discharged, but the symptoms persisted, and I had to be admitted again.

I was met with professionalism, compassion, and care when the ambulance arrived. The paramedics were not only efficient but incredibly kind, helping to ease my anxiety in a terrifying moment.

At the hospital, I was promptly and expertly cared for in the surgical admissions unit by Charge Nurse Lyndsey and Nurse Rachel, whose warmth and calmness made me feel safe.

I was later transferred to the Urology Department 54, where I encountered some of the most dedicated and compassionate individuals I’ve ever met. From the staff who quietly cleaned the ward and brought meals with a smile, to the exceptional nurses and doctors who treated me, not just as a patient, but as a person, I was deeply moved.

The level of empathy, understanding, and attentiveness shown to me was overwhelming in the best possible way. I felt genuinely cared for—not just medically, but emotionally.

While in the ward, Staff Nurse Kristen asked me if I would be comfortable being assisted by a student nurse. The way she mentored the student—with such patience, clarity, and professionalism—was absolutely inspiring. It was a beautiful reminder that the kindness and excellence of today’s NHS are being carefully passed on to the next generation.

What I witnessed at Victoria Hospital, especially in Kirkcaldy, was exemplary. The communication was clear, respectful, and deeply human. I was not a chart, a diagnosis, or a bed number. I was a person in need, and I was treated as such.

I came away from this experience feeling physically better and emotionally uplifted. I am truly grateful for the NHS and incredibly proud that our country provides this kind of care. We are often quick to criticise, but in this moment, all I can feel is gratitude.

To everyone who cared for me: thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Hi Peter472,

I'm really sorry to hear that you were so unwell recently. It must have been a really scary experience for you and I hope you are feeling a bit better now and recovering well.

I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to send in this brilliant feedback about the care you received from staff across the NHS, and in particular, your warm comments about our staff at the Scottish Ambulance Service. It means a lot to staff when patients reach out and say thanks.

It's great to hear that you were so well cared for and that they were able to put you at ease in a very worrying time for you.

Thanks again for your kind comments.

We wish you all the very best,

Take care,

Mark

Dear Peter472,

My name is Susan, and I am the Senior Charge Nurse for Ward 54.

First of all, I would like to thank you for posting such lovely feedback on Care Opinion detailing your patient journey and expressing your thanks.

It is reassuring to hear that you were looked after well by so many disciplines before you arrived in Ward 54. We are deeply touched with your comments highlighting that we were able to continue to deliver good and 'exemplary' care.

Our nursing staff work hard to deliver good compassionate care professionally, and we take pride in ensuring our patients are well cared for and attended to. We would not be able to do this without working collaboratively with the rest of the team and I will ensure that this is passed on to our important healthcare support workers; domestic staff and house-keepers.

Lastly, thank you for recognising the good mentorship shown to our student nurses. It is important that we fully support and educate our future nurse workforce and I am delighted that you were able to witness this and be assured. SN Kirsten will be delighted.

This really is a kind and inspiring response to the care you observed and experienced and I will be delighted to display this on our Care Opinion board.

From the bottom of our hearts,

Thank you kindly and we wish you well in your recovery.
