"waiting times in a and e"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a friend),

sent to a and e with letter from gp for delirium in 90 year old patient. was triaged and bloods taken. over 7 hours later 90 year old was much weaker and took a very bad turn. then consultant and nurse came to help. very distressing that people have to wait so long in an overcrowded a and e. the staff are absolutely lovely, but waiting time completely unacceptable for someone weak of 90 years.

i felt very sad as i watched her deteriorate during such a wait.

Hi person a

Thank you for your comments about your experience when attending the Emergency Department. It is regrettable that you and your friend had to wait for over 7 hours, this is not something we think should happen or want for our patients. Unfortunately the demand for our service far exceeds our capacity with an increasing attendance year on year. It is reassuring to know the staff were kind and caring and continue to give there best despite the circumstances.

Our senior team continue to raise their concerns to management about how busy and overcrowded the department is, with prolonged waits for patients to go to hospital wards and the impact this has on seeing new patients and is a concern to us. Please be reassured we will continue to raise this and engage in opportunities to improve the experience for our patients.

Best wishes to you both

Jenny

ED Lead Nurse
