"My experience on the ward"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / General Surgery (wards 63, 64, 65, 66,& 67) Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Pharmacy

(as the patient),

I was being treated for esophogitis with fluids and various medications. I was in a bay room with other women, which I preferred to a side room. It's nice to chat with others during the day.

The staff were great - nurses were so hardworking and kind in my experience and always tried to get meds on time. They'd go out of their way to help if they could.

The doctors can be rather abrupt, but not maliciously. Just matter of fact. I wish doctors could improve on their bedside manner especially to sensitive patients. They do a good job otherwise.

Domestic staff were great as well as the healthcare assistants. One issue is how long it takes for medication from hospital to be made up in the hospital pharmacy and takes hours to reach the patient in the ward. So you could be discharged and ready to leave, but can't due to having to wait 4-5 hours on medication. That's something I'd say needs reviewed and improved. Please look into this.

There was an incident in which a staff member accused me of intentionally making myself vomit when it wasn't the case. I was and am very vulnerable, this incident triggered an absolute mental breakdown, and I acted on my self-harm urges.

Because of this staff member I now have another suicide attempt on my medical records and had to go through painful treatment. Now I feel so traumatised I can't ever go to that specific hospital again.

I would like to thank one nurse who witnessed me being sick. They were seriously worried for me those hours I was gone as I'd expressed suicidal thoughts with intent. The nurse was genuinely worried and upset when I went missing and called the police to look for me. I would like to acknowledge this nurse for their incredible ability to help comfort a distressed suicidal patient as a general nurse as opposed to a psychiatric nurse. They were brilliant.

Everyone else was perfectly kind and helpful, but I found this staff member to be cruel.

Whoever deals with complaints is welcome to contact me for specifics about this.

Thank you

Dear Recoveryfromillness

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

We are pleased to hear that you found our nursing, domestic, and healthcare assistant staff to be kind, hardworking, and supportive during your stay. It is heartening to know that our team helped ensure you felt cared for, and we will be sure to pass on your appreciation—particularly to the nurse who showed such compassion during a very difficult time for you.

We also acknowledge your concerns regarding the waiting times for hospital-prescribed medications before discharge. We understand how frustrating and difficult it can be to wait for extended periods while ready to leave.

We are truly sorry to hear about the distressing situation you faced and the lasting impact it has had on you. We understand how difficult this must have been, and we want to express our sincere regret that you felt unsupported during such a vulnerable time.

Your feedback will be discussed with the team so that we can reflect and learn from your experience.

Kind Regards

Nicole
