My husband was diagnosed with terminal hepatocellular carcinoma with lung metastases. No treatment was available for him and he did not want to be in hospital or hospice so I nursed him at home with family support and the support of district nurses and hospice care at home.
These services were pivotal in my husband being able to remain in his own home until his passing.
The district nurses kept him pain free and comfortable, I was able to call them 24/7 to attend his syringe driver and administering breakthrough pain relief. He was against carers coming in to our home but quickly realised that these carers were an absolute godsend.
They were from the local hospice, Accord in Paisley, they quickly became friends with the whole family giving us all support and a shoulder to cry on.
The doctor - Dr Bishop also from Accord - was terrific, she provided support and medication that allowed my husband to be comfortable changing the prescription as symptoms changed. She visited every second day or telephoned to make sure all was well with my husband.
All of these professionals were pivotal in my husband's care they were all so kind and supportive.
