I was admitted to Wycombe General Day Surgery for planned abdominal surgery to be performed by Mr. Appleton. I was so nervous I couldn't think properly, but Mr Appleton couldn't have been better, and his standard of care was reflected by the Operating Theatre and Day Surgery team.
My initial consultation with Mr Appleton was confidence-inspiring. He listened to me and was very thorough, treated me with respect and understanding and explained everything appropriately. Moreover, his interpersonal skills and approach were exemplary.
On the day of the operation, he not only demonstrated the same skills in the day unit but also came into the anaesthetics room, knowing that I was nervous before I was anaesthetised. It was unexpected but very appreciated. His competent, kind and calm demeanour is an example to other surgeons, and I hope he teaches.
I worked in healthcare for over four decades and appreciate the standard of care I received. It was above what I expected and contrary to the image portrayed in the media, and having many friends still working in clinical posts, I know that the pressure and reality of the NHS mean that such good care is not universal. I hope Buckingham Healthcare Trust can continue to deliver such a standard and can retain the staff I have met on my recent journey of care. Thank you Mr. Appleton and the staff.
