"Travelling distance"

About: Brechin Health Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

My son burnt his leg on the Sunday and on the Monday morning he had a big blister. We come from Brechin so I called our health centre to be told that would have to be minor injuries. I then had a call from a lovely nurse at Arbroath who said he had to be seen and told us to go to Forfar as it was closer to travel. I think it’s ridiculous that we have nurses at Brechin Health Centre yet I had to travel to another town for a 10 minute appointment!!!

Dear carinatp79

Many thanks for highlighting your experience. Minor injuries is a specialist service which our nurses at Brechin are not qualified to provide. If you would like a more robust response to your concerns please submit them to tay.feedback@nhs.scot where the Angus minor injuries service will be able to address your concerns.

Kind regards.

Dear carinatp79

Thank you for sharing your story on care opinion we really appreciate this feedback.

We’re sorry to hear about your son’s burn to his leg and hope that he is recovering well. Burns can be distressing, particularly in children, and we understand how important it is to be seen quickly and close to home.

While Brechin Health Centre has excellent healthcare staff, more complex or time-sensitive injuries such as burns—especially in children—are best assessed and managed by the specially trained nurses based at our Minor Injury and Illness Units. These nurses have specific expertise in treating the complexity of burns and are well-equipped to provide the appropriate assessment and care.

I'm pleased to hear you had a phone call from a lovely nurse in Arbroath and we also try and ensure you are seen as closets to home as possible. We appreciate that travelling to another town, especially for a short appointment, can feel frustrating. Please be assured that the decision to ask you to attend Forfar was made to ensure your son received the most appropriate treatment as promptly and safely as possible.

Angus Health and Social care partnership are continually working to improve how we deliver care, including making services more locally accessible wherever we can. However, due to the relatively infrequent need for certain types of injury, it isn’t always possible to have specialist services in every location. That said, your feedback is helpful as we review how best to meet the needs of our communities.

Thank you again for your feedback, I hope your son has a smooth and speedy recovery.

Many Thanks

Anne
