"Discharged without consultation or treatment"

About: Adult mental health / Fyvie Ward Adult mental health / Huntly Ward

(as a service user),

While in Cornhill, I felt I experienced neglect and abuse that has left me more traumatised than I was before my stay. I felt mistreated by some hostile staff members - not being able to rely on regular medication and at times being refused. At one point I asked a member of staff for meds and was told that their sandwich was more important and they proceeded to take a bite!

On my second day, my phone was stolen by another in-patient who I had been playing dominos with. As soon as I realised it was missing, I reported it to staff who did not seem to take it seriously. They said they had no jurisdiction to search another patient or explore ways to recover my phone. This left me with no way of contacting the outside world or my partner back home. This was a huge issue for me and led to me becoming very distressed. I was subsequently moved wards, from Huntly to Fyfie and felt there was little done after that to address my health needs while I was there.

I recall being accused of asking to go to a pub which is not credible as I suffer from social anxiety, making being out in public a huge challenge for me.

I feel the care I experienced at Cornhill was exceptionally poor and not what I was led to expect by my psychiatrist prior to agreeing to go. I was eventually discharged without consultation and with no treatment having been offered or progress made in my recovery. I still recognise my need for treatment and support, and despite my lack of confidence and trust in some Cornhill staff  would still like to explore the support options available to help my recovery.
